Tania Maria, who made her breakthrough with “The Secret Agent,” has participated in director Leonardo Racca’s “Sabado Molto” (literally translated as “Dead Saturday”). Produced by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Emilie Lesclaw’s flagship Cinemascopio, the film stars Jesuita Barboza (Latin Blood) and is currently filming between Recife and the countryside of Pernambuco, Brazil.
“Sábado Morto” follows a Recife medical intern who is forced by an unexpected event to return to his hometown in the Pernambuco hinterland after years away. There he is reunited with his mother Teresinha, who is determined to find answers to the mysteries of recent events. Amid memories and anxiety, secrets begin to be revealed. The story will be filmed over five weeks between the capital Recife and the rural Alcorde region of Pernambuco state. The cast also includes Mar Farangola, Mucia Teixeira, and Matheus Cardoso.
The film is Racca’s third directorial effort after Permanencia and Seu Cavalcanti, and his third collaboration with director’s labels Trinqueira Film and Cinemascopio. Lacca has worked as a director, screenwriter, and acting coach for 20 years, serving as assistant director on Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Bacurau and The Secret Agent, as well as acting coach on two of his other fictional feature films, Aquarius and Neighboring Sounds.
Oscar-nominated director Lesclaw said it was “very special” to see the world of the film come to life, and Racca added that it was great to collaborate with the producer again. “We’ve been through a very intense and beautiful process, and we’re even more excited about the next stage of filming in the incredible Pernambuco hinterland.”

Tania Maria’s first on-screen role was as a one-line extra in Bacurau. Her meaty character Dona Sebastiana in The Secret Agent has been lovingly embraced by fans in Brazil and around the world, and her successful performance in the film has earned her awards and accolades. Maria has starred in “Seu Cavalcanti” and the series “Delegado,” which will still premiere in Canal Brazil, and will be collaborating with Rakka for the first time.
“Working with Tanya is always great,” exclaimed Rucka. “It’s great to be able to shoot with her again and with a character who takes a completely different path than she has before. It’s great to see her versatility. Her presence lights up the set and everyone is captivated and captivated by her. We have grown closer and developed a grandmother-grandson relationship. There is so much beauty in the changes in her life in her discovery as an actress that will spill over into our personal relationships as well.”
“Sabado Molto” is a co-production with Brazil’s Cinemascopio and Trinqueira Films and Chile’s Planta, and three titles have been selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival: Dominga Sotomayor’s “La Pera” and Lisandro Alonso’s “Double Freedom.” Both were weekly hits for their directors, including Federico Ruiz’s “For the Opponents” (“Simon of the Mountains”).
