Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), one of Scandinavia’s largest film festivals and headed by the charismatic Tina Rok, has announced its main competition films and first feature films.

The main section features filmmakers Abu Bakr Shawky (“Yomedin”), Julia de Paz Sorvas (“Ama”, “Queller”), Jun Robles Lana (“Bwakaw”), They were joined by Ter Ness (Elling, Happiness), Thomas Stuber (In the Ales), and last year’s Grand Prix winner J. Sengedorj (Silent City). Driver”) are among several celebrities vying for the festival’s main prize of 20,000 euros ($23,000).

A total of 16 world premieres and one international premiere from 16 countries will be judged by US Emmy-nominated costume designer Debra McGuire (Friends, The Morning Show), cinematographer Robert Schaefer (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland), Mongolian producer and screenwriter Nomunzur Turmunk (Silent City Driver), and German producer Ingo Fleiss. (“The Teacher’s Lounge”), Macedonian film director Teona Strugal Mitevska (“God Exists”, “Her Name Is Petrunya”) was the jury president.

Rock said he was particularly impressed with the entries this year from Asia, Latin America and Spain, the only country to win two titles at the competition. “This year we are focusing on Catalan cinema, and we are delighted to cast Catalan up-and-coming female talent Julia de Paz Sorvas in The Good Daughter and The Broken Line, a very warm and unexpected story of divorce,” Rock said of the second feature from Galician director Anxos Fazans (The Wild Season).

The Pov head honcho also highlighted the presence of several Pov regulars, including Mongolia’s J. Sengedorj, who produced The Muralist, a visually striking new drama that explores artistic creation, memory, and forgiveness, and Jun Robles Lana, from the Philippines, who returned to Tallinn for the fourth time with the historical thriller Sisa, starring Hilda Coronel (“Manila in the Claws”).

Key programs range from director Thomas Stuber’s German road trip “The Frog and the Water,” produced by major Pandora Film Productions, to Japanese family drama “The Frog and the Liar,” directed by Yukihiro Morigaki (“Rude to Love”) and Canadian horror “Veins,” directed by Raymond St. Jean (“A Chair Fit for an Angel”). “It’s hard to pinpoint,” Locke said. The only commonality this year. But again,[the tablets]hold up a mirror to our world. Everything that worries and torments us is there: war, the environmental crisis, political hubris, immigration, women’s rights and, above all, the fragile bonds of family life. ”

She specifically cited two political satires that she thought would resonate with audiences. That’s “Belsal,” produced by Mexican heavyweight producer Nicolas Celis (who produced the Oscar-nominated “Roma”), in which helmer Andres Clariondo (“Hilda”) mocks the political obsessions and pomposity of Mexican governor Chema (played by “Finlandia” star Cuautri Jimenez). his wife Carmina (“Locked Up”), and the Norwegian comedy-drama “No Comment” by Ness. Inspired by a true story, the story follows Prime Minister Alma Solvik (Laila Goody) and her spin doctor Karianne Moen (Pia Czerta) as they try to save Solvik’s husband Sondre (Anders Baasmo) from a predicament in which he is caught speculating in stocks.

1st feature competition

Meanwhile, the inaugural feature competition will be “bold and unconventional,” according to curator Torin Tranberg, who selected nine world premieres and four international premieres from 12 countries out of nearly 400 entries from 74 countries.

“There are so many strong debuts this year!” she said, citing Norwegian newcomer Mari Stolstein’s “My First Love,” which she said is “a coming-of-age story told with tenderness and warmth from a perspective that people with disabilities can deeply relate to.” She said Samuel Abrahams’ “Lady” “captivates with its fun and energy, while Pascal Schuh’s “Interiors,” a crowd favorite at last year’s Works in Progress, is also hard to miss.”

Tranberg also mentioned Isabel Hagen’s “On a String,” which was out of competition and was scheduled for its European premiere in Tallinn after winning the U.S. Narrative Writing Award following its Tribeca launch.

Other notable films include Denmark’s Hercules Falling, directed by Christian Bonnke (The Ballroom Dancer), starring star Dar Salim (Loving Adults, The Darklands) as a traumatized warrior.

Across the festival’s selections, there were 2,000 films in the main program, 433 films in the Just Films section for children and youth, and more than 5,600 short films from over 100 countries, with 80 countries participating in the final program. The 29th edition of the festival, which will be held from November 7th to 23rd, will feature a total of 110 world premieres and 30 international premieres.

The other five competition films in PÖFF’s main program – Doc@PÖFF, Critics’ Picks, Baltic Films, Rebels with a Cause and New Doc@PÖFF Baltic – will be published at a later date.
