“Super Mario Galaxy” reached number one on Friday, two days after its release.
The animated sequel to the 2023 original film, based on the popular Nintendo game, struck a ton of gold, collecting $48.3 million on Friday, according to Box Office Mojo.
The Post predicted that the film, which also stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key, “will make $1 billion at the box office, just like its terrible predecessor.”
After spending two consecutive weeks at No. 1, “Project Hail Mary” dropped to No. 2 with sales of more than $10.3 million.
The sci-fi adventure became Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing film in history and its highest-grossing film to date this year.
“The Drama” came in third place with earnings of just over $6.4 million.
The romantic drama, described by the Post as “gripping and at times stomach-churning,” stars Robert Pattinson and Zendaya as a museum director and a bookseller who get engaged and then learn each other’s secrets.
Pixar’s “The Hoppers” dropped two spots to #4 with $2.1 million in Friday, its fifth week in theaters.
“The Great Awakening,” a historical drama about the friendship between Anglican preachers George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin, came in fifth place with $886,921.
