The final episode of the “Stranger Things” series is shaping up to be a major theatrical event.
1.1 million people have signed up to watch the final episode of the Netflix sci-fi series in theaters on New Year’s Eve, with 3,500 showing times completely sold out in more than 620 theaters, co-creator Ross Duffer said in an Instagram post.
Duffer teased that he and co-creator brother Matt Duffer will attend a screening or two. “What a great way to end a 10-year journey together,” Duffer wrote. “Maybe I can meet some people in LA.”
Volume 1 of Season 5 was released on Thanksgiving Day with four episodes, and Volume 2 was released on Christmas Day with three more episodes. In conjunction with the theatrical release, the final episode of the series will also be simultaneously distributed on Netflix on December 31st.
The final episode marks the end of one of Netflix’s most important ventures to date. As Variety exclusively reported, “Stranger Things” recently surpassed 1.2 billion views and contributed more than $1.4 billion to the U.S. GDP. Season 4, released in 2023, remains the second most popular English-language TV title in Netflix history. Considering that Season 5 achieved the biggest opening week ever for an English TV series on Netflix after the release of Volume 1, we expect this season to quickly hit the most popular list when the eligibility period begins in January.
“Stranger Things” is executive produced by the Duffers through their Upside Down Pictures banner, along with 21 Laps Entertainment’s Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen.
