Netflix has given the go-ahead to produce the Korean casino crime drama “The Dealer,” produced by “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, and revealed the main cast.
This drama is about Gong Hwa, a skilled casino dealer, who falls victim to a housing scam and his marriage plans fall apart. Drawn back to the realm he had previously chosen to flee, Gong-hwa descends into the dangerous underworld of gambling and must tap into his long-hidden abilities to regain agency over his situation. Onui and Lee Tae-young wrote the script.
Jeon So-min (“Love Reset,” “Alchemy of Souls”) makes headlines as Gong-hwa, a dealer who has suppressed his ability for years to give him an extraordinary advantage at the gaming table.
Ryu Seung-beom (“Good News,” “Taza: One-Eyed Jack”) plays Hwang Chi-soo, a financially struggling gambler who gets caught up in Gong-hwa’s dangerous plans and survives on unstable bets.
Lee Soo-hyuk (“S-Line,” “The Queen”) plays Cho Joon, a formidable casino competitor whose keen intuition and mysterious demeanor position him as unpredictable.
Ryu Kyung Soo (“Bequest,” “Jung Yi”) plays Choi Woo Seung, Gong Hwa’s fiancée. His calm, homely personality contrasts with his firm approach as a detective.
The series marks the directorial debut of renowned cinematographer Choi Yong-hwan, whose credits include “The Smuggler,” “The Veteran,” “Tazza: High Rollers,” and “Thieves.” Choi is known for his dynamic visual work that enhances genre narratives. Mr. Hwang will join the project as a producer, assembling an experienced creative team that has worked with some of South Korea’s prominent entertainment venues.
Firstman Studios, the production company behind “Squid Game,” is producing “The Dealer.”
