Spain chose director Oliver Lacus’ heart-pounding desert odyssey “Sir,” as the official entry in the best international feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards.
“Silt” is the subject of a hotly picked up in North America by neon, and announced the mid-Kanes Festival after its world premiere at the main contest. Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent” was proposed by Brazil. Park Jang Wook’s “other choice” in Korea is now “Sir” in Spain. But that’s a good problem.
The announcement of the Spanish submission was made by Pablo Burger on Wednesday. Pablo Berger won an animation feature nomination for “Robot Dreams” last year, but his silent film Blancaneebus was selected as an Academy Award entry in 2013.
The choice was based on a vote by members of the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after fully screening the film in the summer. This has resulted in three finalists, “Sir,” Carla Simon’s “Romelia” and Eva Libertado’s “Deaf.”
Similar to the submissions made by Brazil for the Oscars’ international special (Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “secret agent”) and yesterday (“poet”), the determinant of voters to shaking is likely to be the plays of the “Sir” Cannes Film Festival, packing neon pickups. The world premiere in the main contest that sparked rave reviews – variety – is welcomed as a crazy road trip that escalates through desert purgatory, and now marks the Cannes Jue Prize, marking the laxe as the main Spanish auture.
Match Factory sells major markets around the world, ensuring more attention from voters spreads outside the US. With a bow in Spain, “Sirât” was released on June 6 by BTEAM photos and by September 7th it had won a robust euro 2.7 million ($3.2 million).
Laxe’s conscious step towards a wider audience will be facilitated by support from the largest pay TV/SVOD player Movistar Plus+, and “Sirât” will be counted between the co-producers of Pedro and Almodóvar’s El Deseo, in Almodóvar, in the event of a ‘Sirât’.
The submission of “Sirat’s” has also marked the major achievements of Movistar Plus+. Movistar Plus+ has only announced its first production slate of the film original, including Guillermo Farré, Movistar Plus+ Head of Original Films & Spaning Cinema’s “Event Auteur” film. Of course, these are cinematic films that resonate with members of academies both inside and outside Hollywood.
“Sirat” is an original Movistar Plus+ film. It has been produced in collaboration with Film, Eldeseo, URI Films and 4A4 Productions and is distributed in Spain by BTEAM Pictures.
Oriol Maymó (“The Invisible Line”, “Eye for An ays”, “The Next Skin”) served as production manager. The winners of the Goya Award cinema shoot for Laxe’s “Fire Will” were DP, Laia Ateca (“Mantícora”, “Perfect Life”, “The Grandmother”), and Nadia Acimi (“Fire Will Come”, “Mes Fre), “Mimosas, “Mimosas designer.” Musician Kangding Ray has composed the soundtrack.
