New movies “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” are scheduled to be released in theaters in 2028.
Paramount added an untitled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie to its calendar on November 17, 2028, and an untitled “Sonic Universe Event Film” to its calendar on December 22, 2028. The studio also announced plans to bring “Top Gun” back to screens on May 13, 2026, in celebration of its 40th anniversary.
Paramount is keeping details of the “TMNT” and “Sonic” movies secret. All that is confirmed is that producer Neal H. Moritz, best known as the brain behind the successful Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, will also be behind the new Ninja Turtles adventure.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a family-friendly live-action/CG animation hybrid about the Turtle brothers known as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. This will be the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie since the disappointing 2016 theatrical release of Out of the Shadows. Paramount then turned to animation, with the moderately successful 2023 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Mutant Mayhem 2 is scheduled to debut on September 17, 2027.
The next Sonic movie, based on Sega’s video game franchise, is separate from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is scheduled to be released on March 19, 2027. “Sonic” has become a valuable asset for Paramount, with cumulative sales of the first three films exceeding $1 billion worldwide.
“Top Gun,” directed by Tony Scott and starring Tom Cruise, was released in 1986 and became the highest-grossing film of that year with $357.4 million. The story follows Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a talented aviator who competes to become a top fighter pilot. Cruise reprized the role in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which became Paramount’s biggest film in its 113-year history with $1.49 billion.
