A spinoff of “Snowfall” has been ordered to series at FX.
As previously reported, Snowfall stars Gail Bean and Isaiah John will reprise their roles from the original show in the new series, while Asante Black, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmy Sims III will also appear in the spinoff. It was officially adopted for trial use in FX in March.
The untitled drama’s official logline reads: “Set in 1990s Los Angeles, just after the end of the original series, a recovering addict (Bean) struggles to bring West Coast rap to the mainstream, gang wars erupt, and record labels seek to exploit hip-hop culture for their own profit.”
Malcolm Spellman will write and executive produce, with Snowfall alums Dave Andron, Thomas Schramm, Julie Dejoie, Michael London and Trevor Engelson also serving as executive producers. FX Production is the studio.
“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music: the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” said Nick Glad, president of FX Entertainment. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered, and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout lead for Gail Bean, and as always, Isaiah John is great along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall is one of the most successful FX dramas of all time, and we’re thrilled to have Dave Andron, Thomas Schramm, and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team on board.”
Created by the late, great John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Andron, “Snowfall” explored the crack cocaine epidemic in South Central Los Angeles through the perspectives of various characters. Among them were up-and-coming drug lord Franklin Saint, CIA operative Teddy McDonald, and cartel enforcer Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata. The hugely popular show aired for six seasons on FX from 2017 to 2023.
