Saturday Night Live took time to honor Diane Keaton in the second episode of its 51st season.
People magazine confirmed that the Oscar winner passed away at the age of 79 in California on Saturday, October 11, hours before the show was set to air.
The show, which was celebrating 50 years since its premiere, honored the Oscar winner with a tribute card at the end of the episode. The black-and-white photo showed Keaton smiling broadly, wearing her signature collared shirt and tie. Her name was written in simple font on the phone.
In a farewell speech before the credits rolled, host Amy Poehler wore a collared shirt and tie to pay tribute to the late actress.
Although Keaton herself never appeared on SNL, in 2012 Vanessa Bayer played her in a skit celebrating “the lesser-known James Bond girls who have been forgotten by every era.”
Beyer, who plays Keaton, lies fully clothed in bed with 007, holding a small pistol, and says with a laugh, “Prepare to die. Maybe. I don’t know.”

Chloe Fineman stood her ground for the 2022 Father of the Bride sketch. “She’s a beige icon, and we’re here for it,” the sketch’s voiceover says.
Current SNL star Ashley Padilla once worked as Keaton’s assistant and shared her gratitude for her former boss on Instagram.
“I will never forget you. I will always love you. And I will always miss you,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “Thank you for everything, Diane. You changed my life.”
Although Poehler and Keaton never worked together, the It’s Complicated star shared his love for the Parks and Recreation lead on Twitter (now known as X) in 2014.
“So I have something to say about a new discovery,” Keaton wrote. “I fell in love with Amy Poehler. … My 13-year-old son Duke and I watched three years of Parks and Rec episodes in four months. Last night I watched Amy get married. This sealed the deal for me. My love for her is now forever.”
“Amy Poehler can do it all. She’s not only really funny, but also charming, kind, warm, and beautiful, especially as a bride,” she continued.
Keaton first rose to fame in the 1970s after appearing in The Godfather films and numerous collaborations with director Woody Allen. She won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1977 for Annie Hall.
She also frequently collaborated with director Nancy Meyers on films such as Father of the Bride, Baby Boom, Something’s Gotta Give, and It’s Complicated.
Keaton is survived by two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke.
Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30pm ET on NBC.
