Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” took home top honors at the 73rd Annual Motion Picture Sound Editor Golden Reel Awards held Sunday at the Wilshire Ebell Theater.
The film’s sound team won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Dialogue/ADR and Outstanding Achievement in Music Editing – Feature Film.
This award recognizes outstanding achievements in sound editing, sound design, music editing, and Foley artistry in film, television, and games.
Additionally, in the Feature Competition, Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Effects/Foley was selected for “Frankenstein.” In the animation category, the sound editor of Zootopia 2 received top honors.
As a result, a competitive Oscar race in terms of sound has begun. “Sinners” and “Sirat” were both nominated for Oscars in the sound category for combined sound editing and mixing. The Cinema Audio Association, which represents sound mixing, gave the highest honor to “F1” and “KPop Demon Hunter.” “F1” won the award at the British Academy Awards ceremony.
In television, his sound editing work on “Adolescence,” “Alien: Earth” and “Murderbots” all received recognition.
Two honorary awards were also presented, with Kathleen Kennedy receiving the Filmmaker Award and supervising sound editor Mark Mangini receiving the Career Achievement Award.
Speaking about sound, Kennedy said, “Sound helps ground the story. It helps express where the characters are, not just geographically, but emotionally. It helps foresee the intentions of the characters, it helps define what the characters are going through. In short, sound takes the audience on a journey through the film.”
She also talked about the May release date for The Mandalorian and Grogu, which she greenlighted and is also producing. When asked what it was like hearing Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) speak for the first time, she said the little green guy was “another perfect example of a character who has to express emotion and who has to feel a connection, and he doesn’t say a word.”
Patton Oswalt will host the evening, marking his fourth time hosting the Golden Reel Awards. MPSE President David Barber presided over the celebration, and the sound community came together to host their own celebration.
