Singapore tapped “Stranger Eye” as an official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. The Singapore Film Committee revealed this.

Written and directed by Yeo Siew Hua, the surveillance thriller made history as the first Singaporean film to be selected as the main contest at the Venice Film Festival. Atmospheric psychological drama explores themes of surveillance, sadness and identity.

This was Yeo’s second Oscar obedience, following “A Land Imasived,” and represented Singapore in 2018.

“It’s a real honor to represent Singapore again since my previous films,” Yo said. “I am grateful to all of you who have given me this opportunity to explore how we see each other through this film. It’s important to keep our stories alive and tell them the story.”

“Stranger Eyes” is an international co-production involving companies from Singapore, Taiwan, France and the US, including Akanga Film Asia, Volos Films, Films De Force Majeure, and Cinema Inutile. Following Venice, the film opened both the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and the Singapore International Film Festival in 2024.

The production received support from the InfoComm Media Development Authority and the Singapore Film Commission under the Media Talent Progress Program.

Akanga film producer Fran Borgia Asiaside: “We began developing ‘Stranger Eyes’ ten years ago, but we were unable to achieve this great privilege of being a representative of Singapore’s Oscars without the belief and support of IMDA and SFC. stage. ”

IMDA assistant chief executive Yvonnetin highlights the film’s international reach, showing on more than 10 territories, reflecting the growth potential of the films made with Singapore works, along with nine other films that premiered at major festivals such as Cannes, Toronto and Busan this year.
