Seth Meyers fired back after President Donald Trump called him “the least talented person to ‘appear’ live” in the history of television on Truth Social.
Trump went on to say that Myers “went on and on about electric catapults on aircraft carriers” on his late-night show, which turned the host into a “truly deranged lunatic.”
“You may say I’m not talented, you may call me crazy, but I’m not the person who goes on and on about carrier catapults! You’re the one who goes on and on about aircraft carrier catapults!” Myers said on Monday’s episode of NBC’s “Late Night.”
Meyers then played a montage of footage of President Trump talking about catapults dating back more than six years. In one clip from 2019, President Trump said the word “catapult” eight times in one speech.
“I didn’t even know carriers had catapults until you told me!” Myers said with a smile. “I’m not one to steal the show. Ask my friends. Oh, friends are… how do I explain this? They’re the kind of people who enjoy spending time with you, regardless of the financial and legal benefits you can bestow on them.”
Trump falsely suggested in a Truth social post over the weekend that Meyers was speaking “100% anti-Trump and probably illegal.” Myers responded, “You can say whatever you want about me. It’s your First Amendment right, and I have it too, right? We all have it, right?”
In his segment “A Closer Look,” Meyers joked about President Trump’s bathroom renovations in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House. President Trump has repeatedly posted about renovations during the government shutdown, including as many as six times a day.
Concluding the segment, Myers said, “I say this in all sincerity. I don’t want to talk about the catapult. I don’t want to talk about the bathroom. And I realize I’m starting to sound like a deranged lunatic, but that’s what you’re doing to us. You’re making us talk about what you’re talking about, and then you make us all sound crazy.”
He continued, “Instead, we should be talking about the government shutdowns you haven’t fixed and the food aid you’re refusing to fund. Working families are struggling while you renovate bathrooms and build banquet halls.”
“And that’s why your approval ratings are at the highest level…” Meyers said, before cutting to a clip of Trump yelling “Toilet!”
