Perhaps no actor has had as fleeting a connection with public life as Daniel Day-Lewis, so it’s no wonder so little is known about his private life.
The notoriously elusive actor married the love of his life, writer and director Rebecca Miller, in 1996. The two met in 1995 when Day-Lewis was working on The Crucible, an adaptation of the play of the same name by Rebecca’s father, Arthur Miller. Although the two have continued to live a quiet life away from the spotlight, they have attended several events together during their nearly 30-year relationship.

While Day-Lewis is known for her work in front of the camera, Rebecca is also a force behind the lens. The two collaborated on The Ballad of Jack and Rose, which she wrote and directed and he starred in.

A well-known method actor, Day-Lewis didn’t shy away from his process when working with his wife. To play Jack Slavin in the film, he chose to live away from his family to play with the film’s theme of loneliness. Rebecca was game.
In 2005, she told the Washington Post, “Every actor does what he thinks he has to do to keep that reality intact. That’s what he did.” “It’s kind of a focus. He has that in everything. When he laces his shoes, he laces his shoes. Nothing distracts him from that.”
