Before his death on Monday at the age of 93, Valentino Garavani spent decades dressing stars such as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Italian designer is a red carpet maestro, creating glamorous dresses for the Academy Awards and the Met Gala, as well as haute couture wedding dresses for some of the world’s most famous women.
Many of the most memorable looks featured Valentino Red, the designer’s signature color introduced in his first collection in 1959. The poppy red shade has become so recognizable that Pantone created an official color designation.
Hathaway, who Garavani once said of Page Six, was “like[my]daughter,” was one of his most ardent fans. He came out of retirement in 2012 to design custom wedding dresses for stars. Ivory silk tulle dress with hand-painted pink train.
Valentino has gone through several creative directors since Garavani retired in 2008, but Hathaway has remained a die-hard fan of Garavani’s work, wearing a red dress from Garavani’s fall 2003 haute couture collection to a WWD event in October and wearing a 2002 gown on the red carpet at the 2011 Oscars.
Paltrow similarly delved into Valentino’s archives, presenting at the 2019 Emmy Awards wearing a 1963 design with floor-covering organza sleeves. Paltrow’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman called the look “a fun way to wear your clothes over and over again, honor a dear friend, and our nod to looking like a billion dollar beauty!”
Below, take a look at some of the designer’s most iconic looks over the decades.
