The Tokyo International Film Festival has announced that legendary Japanese actor Sayuri Yoshinaga will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival, which will be held from October 27th to November 27th. 5.
The award comes after Yoshinaga starred in this year’s TIFF opening film Climbing for Life, in which she played the first woman to successfully climb Mount Everest. This role marks her 124th film role in a career spanning more than 60 years.
Yoshinaga made his film debut in 1959’s “The Whistle that Calls the Morning” and has continued to be active at the forefront of Japanese cinema ever since. She has won the Japan Academy Award for Best Actress multiple times for roles such as “Ohan”, “Eki to Heaven”, “Tsuru”, “Hana no Ran”, “Nagasaki Burabura”, and “One Year in the North”.
Her achievements were recognized at the highest levels of Japanese society, and the government appointed her a Person of Cultural Merit and awarded her the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
Yoshinaga produced and starred in Cape Nostalgia, which won both the Grand Jury Grand Prix and the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Montreal World Film Festival. In recent years, his works include “Nagasaki Son’s Memories” and “Mother, Is It You?”
Hiroyasu Ando, 38th TIFF Chairman, said, “Yoshinaga overcame many hardships over the years to reach the pinnacle of the Japanese film industry. “Her incredible journey reflects the indomitable female mountaineer she portrayed in Climbing for Life, who became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. We are honored to recognize and recognize her outstanding contribution to the film industry by presenting her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.”
The festival will be held in Tokyo’s Hibiya, Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Ginza areas, and the TIFFCOM Market will be held from October 29th to 31st.
