Sarah Katherine Hook may be best known for appearing in high-stakes dramas and supernatural horror, but her latest film, People We Meet on Vacation, sees the star step into a new type of film: the romantic comedy.
“I’m so happy to be here and be a calm girl who doesn’t scream and cry on screen,” the actress joked at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. “The most important thing on your resume is the feeling of wanting to cry and scream, right?”
Look at Hook’s credits and you’ll see what she means. After making her feature film debut in 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, she went on to appear in Netflix’s teen vampire show First Kill, Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions series, and HBO’s highly anticipated third season of White Lotus, where she played Piper, the privileged daughter of the Ratliff family.
Adapted from Emily Henry’s best-selling and fan-favorite novel, How They Met Harry is a romantic comedy inspired by When Harry Met Sally that follows the unlikely friendship between free-spirited Poppy (Emily Bader) and routine-loving Alex (Tom Bryce), who spend a week together on vacation every year. But the careful balance of their friendship is tested when they begin to doubt whether they might actually be the perfect match. Hook plays Sarah, Alex’s long-time girlfriend.
And while she may have just made her romantic comedy debut, Hook has been a fan of the genre for years. “I’m so happy to be in a romantic comedy,” Hook said. “This is something I’ve wanted to have on my list for a while and I hope it opens the door for other romantic comedies artistically. I’d love to see more.”
What is her favorite movie in this genre? “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” “This is a comforting movie for me,” she said.
“People We Meet on Vacation” was directed by Brett Haley and written by Yulin Kuan, Nunzio Randazzo and Amos Vernon. The film will be available to stream on Netflix starting January 9th.
