Rupaul will appear in “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman’s new, yet untitled action comedy, swapping the runway for a big screen.
Bleecker Street has teamed up with World Of Wonder from Emmy Award-winning media company World of Wonder to acquire North American rights to the film. The film was billed as a first-ever feature from the world of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and will be released in theaters in 2026.
According to the official plot description, the film “trains Best Friends Tess and Dee Dee, a stewardess who exchange shifts at Sternrail. The whole thing is a bit like “Silver Streak,” but even more wonderful.
RuPaul said: “President Judy Gagwell is the part I was born to play, and finally, the role that allows me to sink my dentures.”
“I was friends with RuPaul for 30 years, and during that time I saw him and the people at Wonder of Wonder Help write about culture big in drag racing,” Shankman said. “When they asked me to come on this hilarious, truly indifferent project, I couldn’t resist in a time when I was desperate for the entertainment and laughter of the fugitive.”

The film will be produced by World of Wonder, written by Conor Wright and Christina Friel, and principal photos are scheduled to begin this fall in Los Angeles. Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, RuPaul Charles and Shankman are producers. The deal was negotiated by Miranda King and Avy Eschenasy of Bleecker Street, along with Cinetic Media, which represents the filmmakers. Unapologetic Projects is the executive producer and investor of the project.
Rupaul is an Emmy and Tony award-winning performer, producer and author. It is best known as the creator and host of “Rupaul’s Drag Race.” Additionally, Rupaul has released 18 studio albums, published four books, appearing in over 50 movies and TV shows, ranging from “Foong Foo, Averythy Everything! Julie Newmar” to Netflix’s “AJ & The Queen.”
Shankman is a director, producer, choreographer and author of films such as “The Walk I Remember,” “The Breaking the House,” “The Pacifier,” and “The Rock of Agees,” which gave Tom Cruise in a Donkeyless Chaps. Shankman also served as a judge in seasons 6 and 7 of “So You Think You Can Dance” and is a frequent guest judge for “Rupaul’s Drag Race.”
Rupaul is represented by CAA. Shankman is represented by the UTA. World of Wonder is represented by CAA and Cinetic Media.
