The international trailer was announced for “Guo Ran,” the latest news from director Li Dongmei, who premiered in Venice and won the best film at the 4th Pin Gyao International Film Festival.
Starring Li Manxuan (“The Boy and the Sea”) and Wang Yitong (“Journey to the West”), the film follows a woman in her 30s and navigates the emotional aftermath of pregnancy loss.
The film, drawn from Dongmei’s own experience, focuses on Yu. Yu begins a “new stage as a newly pregnant mother with joy, anticipation and a bit of anxiety” before facing the devastating reality of “the embryo stops developing and the fetal heartbeat is gone.”
“The second characteristic of quietly suffering of Chinese writer-director Li Dong Mae skillfully identifying generational mal laziness in individual crises,” wrote critic Guy Lodge in his variety review. “It’s often closely scaled-down chamber drama that is often labelled as ‘miniatures’ despite the vast human stakes in play, the film proves that Lee’s filmmaking stoic calm and lead performance by Li Manxuan. ”
The trailer arrives just before the film’s Asian premiere at the Pingyao International Film Festival on September 27th, where they compete in the hidden dragon section. “Guo Ran” made the world’s bow at the Tiger Competition in Rotterdam earlier this year.
Producer Qi AI (“The Botanist”) worked with an experienced crew, including filmmaker Matthias Delvaux (“Snow Leopard”), editor Qin Yanan (“Long’s Journey Into Night”), and production designer Li Xinhe (“Absent”).
The 9th Pin Gyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival will be held in Pin Yao, Shanghai, China until September 30th.
