Sales company Reinvent Yellow has closed multiple territory deals for the adventure family film Rocky the Troll, which is being sold at Berlin’s European Film Market. It is produced by the team behind Trolls (2022), the most-watched non-English film on Netflix.
“Rocky the Troll” was acquired by Fox in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, by Monolith in Poland, and by Daro in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Baltic States.
The main character of the Norwegian film is 12-year-old Gaia, who discovers that the stones her great-grandfather collected are troll eggs. When one of the eggs hatches, Gaia forms a magical bond and is immediately drawn into an exciting but dangerous adventure. Forces beyond her control threaten both her own world and the hidden presence of trolls.
Directed by Andrea Eckerbom, screenplay by Edward A. Dreyer.
Producers are Terje Strømstad, Kristian Strand Sinkerud, Espen Horn, and John M. Jacobsen. Produced by Motion Blur with support from regional film fund FimInvest, the Norwegian Film Institute, SF Studios and REinvent.
When Reinvent Yellow acquired the film before AFM, deputy CEO Rikke Ennis told Variety: “‘Rocky the Troll’ was acquired by Reinvent Yellow. It’s a dream project for Yellow. It’s as close as we can get to the iconic 80’s family movies we all cherish (like E.T. and Gremlins). With Motionblur and the Trolls team behind this film, we have no doubt that it will be a huge hit with a great combination of ambition and execution. ”
Helen Oro, Reinvent Yellow’s chief commercial officer, added: “We see ‘Rocky the Troll’ as one of the most commercially promising family adventures in years. This film has all the ingredients needed for strong international sales and long-term audience appeal.”
