Ridley Scott says that most new movies are “shit,” so he rewatches his own

Ridley Scott doesn’t stifle his thoughts on the state of the film industry, telling audiences during a talk at the British Film Institute on Sunday that most contemporary films are “shit.”

According to Metro, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said, “The amount of films literally being made worldwide today is thousands, millions…and most of them aren’t shit, most of them are shit.”

“I think a lot of films today have been saved by the digital effects and become even more expensive. “Put it on paper!”

Later in discussion, Metro reported that “Gladiator” and “Alien” directors were asked if they had a “comfortable film” that he likes to revisit. “Well, in fact, I feel mediocre now. We’re mediocre,” replied Scott. “And what I do – that’s scary – but I started watching my own movies, and in fact they’re pretty good! And they’re not old.”

Scott recently re-watched the 2001 war film Black Hawk Down and added that he thought, “How did you get to do that?”

In a film that others have made, Scott said: “I think good things happen sometimes, and that’s kind of a sense of security that there are people doing good movies.”

Luckily for Scott and his fans, the director who released “Gladiator II,” starring Paul Mezcal last year, said his retirement was “impossible.” He has confirmed that he has completed his production with Jacob Elordi in his next project, the apocalyptic sci-fi film The Dog Stars, and has begun writing a third “Gladiator.”

“He’s around and technically the emperor of Rome,” Scott said of the Paul Mezcal character.
