In fact, it turns out there is more story to tell.
Ice Cube and Kevin Hart may dust off their bickering sidekick roles as “Ride Along 3” is once again in early development at Universal. Tim Story, director of the previous two films in the detective comedy series, and producer Will Packer will also be returning. Before you book your tickets, it’s worth noting that all of these players have been trying to pull off another “ride-along” for nearly a decade without success.
That may change. The big news, confirmed by Variety, is that Daniel Gold, writer of the Netflix/CBC comedy series “Workin’ Moms,” has been tapped to write the script.
It’s no wonder Universal, the studio behind the “Ride Along” movies, would want to revive the highly successful series. Ride Along was released in 2014 and grossed $155 million, while Ride Along 2 was released in theaters in 2016 and grossed $125 million. And Heart and Cube clearly had chemistry. So what’s behind the delay? The answer may be that big-screen comedies have fallen out of favor in recent years. The big studios have largely ceded ground to Netflix and Prime Video, which has invested more in the genre (which is why a wide range of comedies from Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, and Hart are now regularly available for streaming).
For those who don’t know the plot of the movie Ride Along, it follows a security guard who is desperate to prove himself to his girlfriend’s police officer brother.
Story and Hart are set to reunite in Netflix’s new comedy “72 Hours.” Mr. Packer produced the romantic comedy “You Me and Tuscany,” starring Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, for Universal, which premiered this weekend. And Cube recently starred in “War of the Worlds” and played himself in last winter’s “Anaconda” reboot.
Universal declined to comment on this report.
