“The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star Mary Cosby is speaking out about the sudden death of her son Robert Jr.
“Our beloved son, Robert Jr., has been called to be with the Lord. Our hearts are broken, but we take comfort in God’s promise and knowing that he is finally at peace. We appreciate your prayers and your trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of grief,” the reality star posted on Instagram on Wednesday.
A Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson confirmed to Page Six that Robert was found dead on the night of February 23 after officers “responded to an overdose call that turned into a death investigation.”
He was 23 years old.
The RHOSLC star hasn’t been shy about shedding light on Robert and his estranged wife Alexiana Smokov’s alleged drug use, including during Season 6, which was filmed in early 2025.
Smokov filed for divorce from Robert in November after three years of marriage.
Robert also has a history of run-ins with the law, which Mary discussed at the Season 6 RHOSLC reunion in January.
In the episode, Mary, 53, said her son was arrested in November and is serving time in prison after violating a restraining order imposed by Smokov’s family.
“I’m not worried about him,” Mary said, clearly upset. “I know he’s in a place he’s not using.”
“At some point, I have to step back so he can learn and make his own decisions. And unfortunately, he’s learning the hard way. But I’m okay with that… and I’d rather him be there than die, you know?” she added.
Robert was released earlier this month after serving two months in prison.
His attorney, Clayton Sims, exclusively told Page Six at the time that Robert considered the time he spent in prison a “blessing.”
“It’s helped him sober up and think clearly. He’s looking forward to doing something positive,” Sims said.
On February 7, Mary celebrated her son’s release from prison by posting a photo of him on Instagram, writing, “#godfirst I love you all 🙏❤️ My beautiful son. I love you, sm❤️🙏.”
Real Housewives executive producer Andy Cohen responded to the news on February 25th, writing in a thread: “Devastatingly sad news from SLC. This is every parent’s worst nightmare. My heart is breaking for Mary. All my love to her and Robert Sr.”
