SEVILLE, Spain — Spain’s La Pepa Films is reteaming with Telecinco Cinema, the film division of Mediaset España, and Movistar Plus+, Spain’s top paid performance company, for Operación Camarón 2, the sequel to the hit Spanish comedy Operación Camarón (Undercover Wedding Crashers).
As with the first film, Buena Vista International will release the film in Spanish theaters.
“The original creative team and acting team are coming back,” La Pepa co-founder and producer Alvaro Alonso told Variety at the Seville European Film Festival.
The sequel, directed by Carlos Cerrón and written by Manuel Burque and Josep Gatell, moves the series’ secret conceit from the trap scenes of Cádiz to the summer festival circuit of Galicia.
This time, undercover cops are sent to infiltrate a Galician verbena band, setting up a high-octane culture clash of on-stage spectacle and off-stage intrigue.
“It’s just a fish out of water,” Alonso said. “The main characters are out of their element in Galicia, and the contrast is very, very interesting.”
Production will take place primarily in Galicia, with cameras expected to roll in mid-May 2026 and a theatrical release in Spain in 2027.
The renewed partner mix (Telacinco Cinema, Movistar Plus+ and Buena Vista International alongside La Pepa) reflects the commercial strategy of the first film.
Operación Camaron, which features Julián López, Carlos Librado “Nene”, Natalia de Molina and Paco Tos on the top line, opened on June 22, 2021, while COVID-19 restrictions still limit attendance. It was the third-highest grossing Spanish film of the year at the local box office, selling 598,000 tickets.
After that, the free broadcast recorded strong viewer ratings. Telecinco’s 2023 primetime offering finished as the most watched film of the year on Spanish television, recording an excellent share of 19.4% and 2,549,000 viewers.
“The first time it was released on Telecinco, it had the highest number of viewers since “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and it continued to do well after that. It was also No. 1 on Netflix and Movistar Plus+,” Alonso recalled.
“Operación Camarón,” a Spanish adaptation of the Italian blockbuster “La Napoule,” also marks the first feature film by La Pepa, the Seville-based company co-founded by Alonso and Manuel Yebra.
La Pepa’s mainstream editorial policy is reflected in the story. “We’ve always sought out mainstream comedy with a little heart that is loved by a wide audience,” Alonso said.
The 22nd Seville European Film Festival will be held in the Andalusian capital from November 7th to 15th.
