Mystikal, a multiple-time Grammy-nominated rapper in the early 2000s, pleaded guilty Tuesday to raping a woman at his Louisiana home about four years ago, according to court records.
The 55-year-old performer, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in Ascension Parish court, records show.
Tyler’s attorney did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Tyler could face up to 25 years in prison without the benefit of parole, probation or suspended sentence. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 15th.
The rapper has been held without bail at Ascension Parish Jail since his arrest in 2022 on suspicion of raping and strangling a woman at his home in Prairieville, about 18 miles (29 kilometers) from Baton Rouge.
The New Orleans native rose to national prominence in the 1990s, best known for his 2000 hit “Shake Ya A–,” which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance.
In 2003, he pleaded guilty to sexual assault and was sentenced to six years in prison.
That same year, he received two Grammy nominations: Best Rap Album for “Tarantula” and Best Male Rap Solo Performance for his single “Bounce Back (Bumpin’ Me Against the Wall).”
