Indonesian director Ismail Basbeth’s psychological horror feature ‘The Most Mysterious Man’ (local title: ‘Raib’) received co-financing from Malaysia’s Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd, with the deal closing during JAFF Market 2025.
The agreement was signed at the booth of the Indonesian Ministry of Culture by Luang Basbeth Bercelita, a media and publishing company founded by Ismail Basbeth and producer Raiza Angraheni. The project is the first completely original concept by Ismail Basbeth, developed from the beginning in partnership between two producers and directors.
“The Most Mysterious Man” is the story of a craftsman devoted to his wife and three children whose life unravels when he returns home to find another family living there and his loved ones missing. As he searches for answers, no one in the village recognizes him, despite living there all his life, and he falls into paranoia and violence.
Angraheni spent seven months at the Busan Asian Film School developing the story together with the director. The project won the TAICCA Award at the Asian Content & Film Market during the 2024 Busan Program and was also selected for the Singapore International Film Festival’s Asia Producers Network 2024.
Angraheni won MTN Development Fund from Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture in October for another project, The Light of Fire. We are developing the “most mysterious man” through the Talents Tokyo 2023 program.
Luan Basbeth Bercelita will co-produce with Matta Cinema Productions and Phoenix Film Co., and is seeking additional co-production and international distribution partners ahead of a scheduled production start in 2026.
Basbeth’s “Sara” premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and won the Best Director Award at JAFF 2023. Currently filming “My Own Last Supper”.
