Donald Trump posted a lengthy message on Truth Social Saturday morning in which he reflected on his White House dinner with “Real Time” host Bill Maher. The president called the night a “total waste of time” and said Maher was “no different” from liberal late-night nemesis such as Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.
“Sometimes in life you waste time,” Trump wrote. “Television host Bill Maher, through one of his friends, and a friend of mine, asked to have dinner with me, and I agreed. He came into the famous Oval Office looking quite different than I expected. He was extremely nervous and completely self-conscious. I didn’t feel confident. And immediately, within seconds, I asked for a ‘vodka tonic’ to calm my nerves.” He told me, “I’ve never experienced anything like this before, and it’s really scary.” In a way, it was somewhat adorable! Anyway, we had a great dinner, it was quick and easy, and he seemed like a nice guy, and at our first post-dinner show, he was very respectful about our encounter — but why wouldn’t he, when I’ve been doing everything to get our country back from “OBLIVION”? ”
Trump’s post on Friday, which appears to have been partly motivated by Maher, poked fun at the president’s claim that China would “kill all ice hockey” in Canada if the two countries struck a trade deal.
President Trump added, “In any case, it was a complete waste of time to harass people like this in the White House. And last night, after explaining how disaster Canada’s “leaders” would respond and how Canada has been “ripping off” the United States on trade for years (but not anymore!), I jokingly stated the truth. “The first thing China will do is end all ice hockey being played in Canada and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. ”Well, he went on and on about the hockey comment, “What kind of person would say something as stupid as that?” as if I meant it. ”
Trump then attacked Maher’s rating, calling him a “very overrated lightweight.”
“Fortunately, his TV ratings are so low that no one will ever find out about his various fake news statements about me. He’s no different than Kimmel, Fallon, or Colbert, but I have to admit, he’s a little more talented! Anyway, Bill Maher is a very overrated lightweight, and the Republican Party on the left You should stop using him to show us how you’re coming at us — our base, the greatest of all time, laughs at your weakness when you do that!” Maher asked me if I could come.” Returning to the White House again, I asked him to come to the great White House Christmas party with his friends, but he did not attend. Anyway, I would rather spend my time making America great again than wasting it on him. ”
In April 2025, Mr. Maher gave a softer account of his dinner with Mr. Trump. He said on an episode of “Real Time” that Trump is “polite” and “much more self-aware than he lets on in public.”
“The guy I met wasn’t the guy who tweeted a bunch of horrible crap the night before the dinner about how this dinner was a bad idea and what a crazy piece of shit I was,” Maher said. “First of all, he laughs. I’ve never seen him laugh in public. But he laughs, including at himself. He’s not a liar.”
