Plimsoll Productions, a division of ITV Studios specializing in natural history documentaries and live events, has launched Plimsoll Immersive to develop experiential content for AR, VR and AI wearables.
Plimsoll Immersive’s content incorporates original ideas and the company’s existing intellectual property into new experiences. Narratively and conceptually, the content maintains Plimsoll’s natural history focus and immerses viewers in 2D and 3D environments through advanced technology.
Alex Ranken, Plimsoll’s Natural History Creative Director, will therefore lead Plimsoll Immersive while continuing to produce content for broadcast television. During the past five years at Plimsoll, Ranken has directed and produced several series and specials, including Apple’s “Tiny World” and “The Wild Ones,” Disney+’s “A Real Bug’s Life” and ITV’s “A Year on Planet Earth.”
“Plimsoll has a reputation for visually rich, bold storytelling and editorial integrity,” Ranken said in a statement. “We are now applying these elements to this exciting new world, immersing audiences in the story and ultimately fostering a deeper connection and engagement with the natural world.”
Mark Brownlow, head of natural history at Plimsoll, said: “At Plimsoll we are always looking to the future and Alex represents what’s next. With his innovative storytelling and mastery of technology, he’s the perfect next generation creator to grow the division and push the company into exciting new territory. Alex is already working on the recently released 3D “We will build on Plimsoll’s experience with 3D storytelling from watching the IMAX film ‘Horse Power.’
“Horse Power” is a documentary about the relationship between people and horses around the world, narrated by Josh Brolin. Other upcoming Plimsoll projects include “Surviving Pompeii with Tom Hiddleston,” “Force of Nature,” and “Skyscraper Live,” which will live stream free soloist Alex Honnold’s ascent of Taipei 101 on Netflix.
Plimsoll already has multiple projects in production for Plimsoll Immersive, including adaptations of yet-to-be-announced titles.
