The farewell is a very sweet sadness in the first trailer for Chloe Chao’s “Hamnet.”
Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, “Hamnett” tells the story of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes. The film follows a couple trying to reconcile with the loss of a child, and how William Shakespeare began writing his beloved classic, “Hamlet.”
Paul Mezcal and Jesse Buckley set up William and Agnes Shakespeare, respectively, and Joe Alwyn as Bartholomew. Jacobi Jupe will star as Hamnet with a supporting cast including Emily Watson, Jack Sharloo and David Wilmot.
Zhao wrote the script with O’Farrell. Zhao, Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes, Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Laurie Borg all act as film producers. “Hamnet” is produced by Amblin Entertainment, Hera Pictures, Neal Street Productions, and Book of Shadows. The film is distributed nationally by focus features with internationally universal photography. “Hamnet” will be released in theaters on November 27th and will expand to theaters nationwide on December 12th.
“Hamnet” marks Zao’s first film following Marvel’s “Eternity.” Zhao was the second woman to win the best director at the Oscar thanks to her acclaimed feature “Nomadland”. The film also won the best photos and best actresses of Frances McDormand. Credits for Zhao’s previous film include “My Brothers Teed Me” and “The Rider.”
