Fans of the vision ask themselves: “What is sadness, but patient love?” Paul Bettany’s android character died in Avengers: Infinity War, but has since been revived in the 2021 Disney+ series WandaVision. The wait is almost over, as Vision is set to return in 2026 with the Disney+ series Vision Quest.
Marvel released the first trailer for Vision Quest exclusively for fans at New York Comic Con. The trailer showed Bettany returning as White Vision at the end of WandaVision, as well as a normal human version. There was also a human version of Ultron, voiced by James Spader in the second Avengers movie, as well as AI programs Jarvis, Friday, and Edith. The trailer ended with a brief shot of Tommy, Vision, and Wanda’s son, who appeared as a child in WandaVision, as an adult.
“Vision Quest” is described as the third part of a trilogy that includes “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along.” In the trailer, Bettany walks into a white mansion and is greeted by human servants who are actually just reproductions of the AI program. Among them is Jarvis, Tony Stark’s AI program who later becomes Vision. Friday replaced Jarvis as Stark and Spider-Man’s AI assistant. And Edith, the AI program in Stark’s sunglasses in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Spader reprized his role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, playing the genocidal AI that Vision appears to destroy at the end of the film (though it happened off-camera). In addition to reappearing as Ultron, Spader was shown as a human in the trailer. “Vision Quest” co-stars Todd Stashwick, Tinia Miller, Ruaridh Mollica, and Emily Hampshire. Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) created the show and serves as showrunner and executive producer.
The last time Marvel fans saw Vision was when he was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The purple supervillain rips the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead, killing him instantly before it snaps and turns half the universe to dust. Vision was then mysteriously revived and lived a peaceful family life in “WandaVision” opposite Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen. However, in the miniseries, it is gradually revealed that Wanda is mentally unstable and that the quiet TV sitcom-esque life she shared with Vision was all magic created out of her grief. It is revealed that Wanda stole Vision’s lifeless body from the government organization SWORD and brought him back to life using her dark and powerful magic. The Vision that Wanda recreates has no memory of his previous life or death, but he soon finds himself fighting a government-controlled vision sent to destroy him. The evil White Vision regains all his previous memories and flies off alone.
Wanda then reappeared in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, undergoing a heel turn and becoming the film’s main villain. In 2024, Joe Locke (The Heartstopper) plays Wanda and Vision’s son Billy in the WandaVision spinoff, Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn as the witch Agatha Harkness. The series ended with Agatha and Billy setting off to find Billy’s brother Tommy. “Vision Quest” seems to age Tommy the same way “Agatha” did Billy.
