Kathy Griffin was honored Friday night by Out magazine as the LGBTQ+ community’s champion of the year.
The “My Life on the D-List” star was presented with an award by Sia during the Out100 Party at Sia held at Nya Studios West in Los Angeles. “She’s my friend, she’s an amazing person, and she saved my life,” the singer said after serenading Griffin with the empowering anthem “Unstoppable.”
Griffin thanked the queer community for standing by her even when it was “canceled” after her clash with Donald Trump. “In my day, we had the word hag,” Griffin said. ‘I don’t say the word hag anymore, but honey, I’m the OG hag.’ I know you guys. i will be back. we have a relationship. ”
She continued, “We are a community, so I’m so honored to be chosen as this year’s champion. These are tough times, so I have to say please get involved in politics as much as you can. Please. This is so important because I care about you and I care about America, where it may not be safe to even walk down the street as a gay person.”
Niecy Nash-Betts accepted the Icon Award in a video message after being unable to appear in person because she was filming in Atlanta. “Boots” star Miles Heiser was also recognized as one of the Out100 honorees.
