Peter Chernin’s expansive content production company, North Road Company, has launched a new film label focused on “unique filmmaker perspectives that appeal to a wide range of audiences.”
The business, called North Road Films, will be led by president Cori Adelson. The producer has already overseen projects co-financed and produced by North Road, including the high-profile upcoming A24 project Backrooms. The film is based on a widespread conceit about a digital maze that exists outside of reality. 20-year-old Kane Parsons will direct Oscar nominees Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
North Road Films will operate alongside Chernin Entertainment Films and will be tasked with supporting both emerging and established directors to produce and finance projects that connect with a wide audience.
“Kori has an incredible eye for talent and story,” said Scott Manson, CEO of North Road Company. “We look forward to continuing to support her and her team as they work with top filmmakers to bring cool commercial films to market.”
During his nine years at Chernin, Adelson has produced films for A24, Netflix, and Fox. She was the lead producer on Netflix’s “Fear Streets” trilogy, which pioneered a first-of-its-kind serial release strategy. He also served as lead producer on “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” which debuted at number one on Netflix this year. Her credits also include “Spies,” “The Mountain Between Us,” the animated hit “Spies in Disguise” and “Dicks: The Musical” with A24.
“At North Road, we want to work with filmmakers with unique perspectives to create films that are original, human, and funny – stories that are specific yet resonate with audiences around the world,” Adelson said.
The executive is currently working on the upcoming A24 release Altar, written by Will Sudic and directed by Egor Abramenko. and 11817, written by Matt Robinson and directed by Louis Leterrier. The latter stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. In her new role, she will work closely with Apple (along with vice president Caroline Pitofsky and creative executive Grant Donghia) as part of Chernin’s first-look deal.
In January, Media One, Europe’s leading independent studio, announced the signing of a deal to acquire Northroad. The combination will create the world’s largest independent studio with major creative locations on five continents and the ability to work across all genres and formats. North Road and its labels will serve as Mediawan’s North American hub.
