Variety reports that FX has commissioned Noah Hawley and Rob Mack to adapt Ubisoft’s Far Cry video game into a series.
In addition to co-producing the series, Mac (ex-McElhenney) will also star. The series will be streamed on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally. Although exact plot details are being kept secret, the series will follow an anthology format similar to the games, with each season featuring a different cast and setting.
“It’s a dream come true to work with Noah Hawley,” Mack said. “Ubisoft has been incredibly generous and entrusted us with one of the most iconic video game worlds ever created, and through it all, my FX family has continued to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

The series deepens Mac and Holly’s relationship with FX. Mack is best known for creating and starring in FX’s hit comedy series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” whose 17th season aired earlier this year. It is the longest-running live-action comedy in American history. He also stars in and is an executive producer of the FX documentary series Welcome to Wrexham. The series ran for four seasons and has won 10 Emmy Awards.
Meanwhile, Hawley is also the creator of the FX anthology series “Fargo” and the recently renewed sci-fi series “Alien: Earth.” Fargo has aired five seasons so far, winning seven Emmy Awards out of a total of 70 nominations and three Golden Globe Awards out of 14 nominations. Hawley also created the FX-Marvel series “Legion,” which aired for three seasons.
The series also brings Mac back into business with Ubisoft. He co-created and starred in the Apple TV series Mythic Quest for four seasons, which was also produced by Ubisoft Film & Television.
“What I love about the Far Cry game series is that it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation on a theme, just like each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” Hawley said. “It’s a dream come true to create a big action show that changes from year to year, constantly exploring human nature through this complex and chaotic lens. We’re thrilled to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent and ambitious sensibilities to the screen.”
Mack will executive produce under his More Better Productions banner, while Hawley will executive produce under an overall agreement with FX and Disney Entertainment Television via 26 Keys. 26 Keys’ Emilia Serrano will executive produce alongside 3 Arts’ Nick Fraenkel, More Better Productions’ Jackie Cohn and John Campisi, and Ubisoft Film & Television’s Gerald Guilmo, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill. The series is produced by FX Productions.
“FX has had a great partnership with Rob Mack and Noah Hawley over six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them team up on Far Cry,” said Nick Glad, president of FX Entertainment. “We believe they will tell this story in an original, engaging and highly entertaining way. We would also like to thank our partners at Ubisoft for entrusting us with this beloved work.”
This will be the first live-action television adaptation of Far Cry. The game was made into a direct-to-video film in 2008 starring Til Schweiger and directed by Uwe Boll. Meanwhile, Netflix has released Captain Razorhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, an animated series inspired by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, in 2023.
The first Far Cry game was released in 2004. Since then, five other games in the main series have been released, along with numerous spin-offs. The latest game, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021. Since its debut, over 100 million unique players have enjoyed the game.
Mac is repped by WME, 3 Arts, Narrative and Sloane Offer. Hawley is repped by WME, Untitled and McKuin Frankel Whitehead. Ubisoft is repped by WME and Greenberg Glusker.
