The writer and director of the film, which is likely to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s last starring role, spoke out Friday following the death of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star. Joston Ramon Zani said Brendon was “incredibly proud” of his work on the romance drama Yesterday Is Almost Here.
“Nicholas was a central character in our upcoming films, and his death is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working with him,” Taney said.
The film has been delayed until release while Nicki “fully recovers from her first surgery,” Taney said. However, after a week’s run at the Look Theater in Monrovia, California, the roadshow was once again paused due to complications from a second surgery, Taney explained.
According to his Facebook page, Brendon underwent knee surgery in November 2025 and spinal fusion surgery in April of the same year. In 2021, he also fell and suffered serious injuries, and in 2022 he was diagnosed with congenital heart disease.
“Following his death, we now find ourselves on a path of deep loss and uncertainty. Nicki was not only central to this film, but central to how we wanted to bring this film to the world,” Taney said.

“Yesterday is almost here.”
Jackie Moore, Shoshanna Wilder and Philip Andre Botero co-star in the drama about a writer who suspects his wife is cheating on him.
“Nicki gave an extraordinary performance, with depth, honesty, and a presence that reminded us of why he was so beloved as an actor. He is a testament to his enduring talent. He will be greatly missed. This loss is heartbreaking, but we remain committed to honoring his legacy by ensuring his work is seen and remembered.”
“This project was really meaningful to Nicholas. He approached the role with passion, humility, and a renewed sense of purpose. He often talked about how much this film meant to him, not just as a creative endeavor, but as a personal milestone. This was in many ways his comeback, and he fully embraced it.”
Brendon has had some highly publicized legal and personal issues over the years, most recently last week. But Taney said, “On set, he was focused, generous, and committed to giving his all. On set, he was warm, thoughtful, and deeply grateful for the opportunity to tell this story. Nicholas gave this film everything he had, and we’re proud to share it with the world.”
Brendon has appeared in several independent films in recent years, including Christmas Slasher and On a Dark and Bloody Ground.
