Neve Campbell recently told CBS Mornings that she “didn’t think I would be able to live with myself” if she accepted the offer to do Scream 6.
“When I made that decision, I never thought I would be able to live with myself walking on set,” Campbell said. “I didn’t feel right. I just knew my value to this series was greater than what was presented to me. For me, I needed to make that choice.”
“When we said goodbye, I thought it was the end. I knew there was a good chance that it would be,” she added.
Campbell explained that while it was difficult to learn that the Scream 6 production team was “on the first day of filming and I wasn’t there,” he ultimately believed he had made the “right” decision to exit the film.
“And when I spoke out about this, it wasn’t really to rally everyone. It was my truth at the time and the fact that people supported me and I got great support, which was great. And I feel like other people need to make those choices.”
Campbell, who has been the face of the Scream series for many years, told Variety in 2022 that he would not be returning for the sixth installment because he felt that “the offer that was presented to me was not commensurate with the value that I brought to the series.”
Director Campbell released a statement to Variety magazine saying, “Unfortunately, I will not be appearing in the next Scream movie.” “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my worth, especially when it comes to ‘Scream.’ I felt that the offers that were presented to me were not commensurate with the value that I brought to the franchise. It was a very difficult decision to move on. To my ‘Scream’ fans, I love you.” You have always been so incredibly supportive of me. I’m forever grateful to you guys and what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years. ”
Campbell is set to return to Scream 7, along with original cast members David Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Courteney Cox, after a pay dispute. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first Scream movie, will direct.
