Netflix has commissioned a Canadian series, “Granville Girls,” based on the novel “The Gilbert Girls” by Kat Cahill.
The streamer has ordered eight episodes of the series. The official logline states:
“As the great railroad rolls through the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Emma Daniels becomes a ‘Granville Girl,’ one of a select few women hired to work at the Granville Hotel. The job offers adventure, friendship, and the chance to raise a family. If she can resist the hotel’s strictest rules, she’ll never cross paths with a man. But when Emma’s heart is captured by the hotel’s mysterious builder, she faces a choice that could cost her everything.”
Adrianna Maggs (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Frontier) will serve as the series’ writer and showrunner. Christina Jennings (Murdoch Mysteries, Departure), chairman and president of Shaftesbury, will serve as executive producer. Produced by Shaftesbury.
“Shaftesbury is delighted to partner with Netflix and showrunner Adriana Maggs to bring The Granville Girls to our screens,” said Jennings. Viewers around the world will discover the wonders of the Rocky Mountains, the perfect setting for young women to explore adventure, friendship and romance. ”
The Gilbert Girls series has six books published to date, starting with Forbidden Forever and ending with the latest, On the Edge of Forever.
“‘Granville Girls’ is an epic, blue-sky series that offers the comfort of female friendship and the charm of period romance,” said Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, Content Directors, Netflix Canada. “With Adriana’s unique voice and Cristina’s strong production, we are confident that viewers will be hooked from the first episode.”
This is Netflix’s latest move into the Western romance genre. The streamer is currently airing the series “Ransom Canyon” (based on the novel by Jody Thomas), which has been renewed for a second season. Variety also reported that Netflix is currently developing a series adaptation of Elsie Silver’s Chestnut Springs novel.
