Nelly Furtado has announced that she is quitting music after a series of attacks from body shamers on social media.
The songstress made the announcement in an emotional social media post on Friday, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the release of her first album, Who Nelly!
“After 25 years, I couldn’t be happier that my music has reached a whole new generation of fans,” she wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of herself from 2000 and a fairly recent clip taken on stage in Berlin over the summer.
Furtado wrote that it was “fun” to “stand on stage again” but that she is moving forward.
“All this aside, I have decided to step away from performing for the time being and pursue other creative and personal endeavors that I feel are better suited to the next phase of my life,” Furtado, 46, wrote.
“I’m really enjoying my career. I still love writing music, because I’ve always considered it a hobby that I was lucky enough to have as a career,” she continued, adding, “I will always identify as a songwriter.”
“Thank you for all the years of fun, community, and surprises,” the songstress wrote, adding, “I express my infinite gratitude to everyone who has been touched by my music and attended my shows over the years.”
The “I’m Like a Bird” hitmaker also thanked “the people who have worked so hard to make my pop dreams come true on a creative and organizational level” and “my amazing collaborators and loyal people.”
Champions. ”
“Thank you and good night!” I concluded this post with the SKIMS model.
Page Six has reached out to Furtado’s representatives for further comment.
Fans flooded the “Promiscuous” singer’s comment thread to congratulate Furtado on the milestone.
One follower wrote: “Forever an icon,” while another chimed in: “Why am I crying? 😭.”
“Nelly we need you 😭💕,” a third lamented, while a fourth added: “25 years later you’re still as iconic as ever ❤️.”
Furtado then made a sharp fashion statement when she headlined Manchester Pride in August, amid online body-shaming attacks over her on-stage outfits and figure.
She took to the stage wearing a cinched crop top, miniskirt, and an oversized optical illusion T-shirt with the outline of a cartoon hourglass body on the belt that read “Whoa Nelly.”
The back of the shirt, which had a cartoon on it, had the words “Better than ever” written in tattoo font.
The Canadian hitmaker modeled the look in a sultry pair of seductive fishnet stockings and knee-high go-go boots.
In January 2025, the singer posted a body-positive message on Instagram along with two bikini selfies.
“Have a neutral figure in 2025 😉, but most importantly, love with every inch of your heart ♥️ Thank you for all the memories this year 🙏🏼,” she captioned the photo, adding, “I experienced a new level of self-love and genuine confidence from within.”
