NBC has ordered two pilots: a romantic comedy called “Newlyweds,” and an untitled comedy about a therapist and her slashing best friend, played by Jane Lynch and Katey Sagal.
“Newlyweds” was written by Gail Lerner and executive produced along with Jamie Lee Curtis, Eric Tannenbaum, Kim Tannenbaum and Scott Schwartz. According to the official logline, the project is “a late-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a down-to-earth professor who impulsively marry after a whirlwind courtship.” Lionsgate Television will produce and Universal Television will serve as the studio.
Lerner is best known for his work as a writer and producer on seasons 5-8 of NBC’s “Will & Grace” and seasons 1-6 of ABC’s “Black-ish.”
The logline for the untitled pilot, written by Kari Reiser, reads: “Ginger (Sagal) and Jill (Lynch) have always been a team of opposites, working best together. As they sort through the past and look to the future, they discover that despite everything, they wouldn’t change a thing.” The project is loosely inspired by the real-life friendship between Pepper Schwartz and Janet Lever, therapists and sociologists who study sex and gender and serve as consulting producers. Executive producers include Reiser, Lynch, Sagal, Krista Vernoff of Trip the Light Productions, Andrew Stern, and Alexander Schmidt. The pilot is being produced by Paramount Television Studios.
Riser is best known as the creator of “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” which aired for five seasons from 2006 to 2010 on CBS. She was also a writer and producer for seasons three through six of Will & Grace, where she appeared in five episodes and has various acting credits.
