Naomi Watts’ biggest fashion critic lives at home.
“Fashion is a big topic in our household,” Watts said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Monday.
The Love Story star revealed that her 17-year-old daughter Kai with ex-husband Liev Schreiber has a lot of opinions when it comes to her mom’s wardrobe.
“I seriously take notes from her…requested or not,” Watts added.
Although the 57-year-old admitted that “I think, ‘Oh, maybe they’re right,'” she chose to go against the advice of younger models when it came to the 2018 Met Gala.
As a guest of Michael Kors, Watts chose between two options for a ball celebrating the theme of celestial bodies: fashion and Catholic imagination.
“That’s definitely it, Mom,” her daughter said emphatically, choosing something that clearly didn’t sit well with Watts.
The star was caught unaware on her way to the gala that night when Kai FaceTimed her while in the car with Kors himself, realizing that her mother was not actually wearing the dress Schreiber had personally chosen for her.
“I felt so good,” Watts insisted, but Schreiber reportedly yelled, “I was wearing the wrong dress!”
But her daughter’s choice really had her time to shine, as she wore a custom black ensemble at the Venice Film Festival a few months later.
However, Kai was still not completely satisfied with the choice and took off the chiffon cape because it was “too dramatic”, which Kai said: “I needed a cape.”
Schreiber has since established himself in the world of high fashion, making his runway debut at Paris Fashion Week’s Valentino show last March and opening the Jason Wu show at New York Fashion Week in September of this year.
While her daughter may have her own opinions on Watts’ wardrobe choices, she admitted on Today with Jenna & Friends a few months ago that she’s “a little bit becoming a mom,” adding, “She’s very young, but she’s grounded, so it was good for her to feel proud of what she’s doing.”
