Naomi Watts was costumed for the role.
The 57-year-old actress paid homage to her on-screen character Jackie Kennedy Onassis at the premiere of Love Story on Tuesday, embracing the former first lady’s penchant for opera-length white gloves and midcentury glamour.
Watts turned heads at New York’s Carnegie Hall in a dramatic black Balenciaga cold-shoulder dress that featured a crystal-embellished neckline with just the right amount of sparkle.
But it was the accessories that made this look memorable. Watts completed her look with pure white opera-length gloves and giant diamond Cartier earrings worth $133,000. Each drop style is set with 30 diamonds: 24 baguette cuts, 4 princess cuts, and 2 torodia cuts.
Watts wore her blonde bob down in soft waves, and makeup artist Mary Wiles said in a post after the event that she aimed for “effortless elegance” with “radiant skin and fresh makeup.”
Stylist Jeanan Williams put together an ensemble for the actress, who is set to star in the upcoming FX series about the romance and tragic fate of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The choice of gloves was fitting as they are one of the former first lady’s favorite accessories. Kennedy Onassis wore white gloves during the day and at formal events alike throughout the 1960s, and was known to wear them with evening dresses at state dinners at the White House and at glamorous galas abroad.
Creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli has made opera gloves a signature accessory since joining Balenciaga last year, so Balenciaga was a natural choice for Watts’ look.
They’re already a red carpet staple, appearing on Demi Moore at Glamor’s Woman of the Year Awards, Tate McRae at the Grammys and Tessa Thompson at the Doha Gala.
“Love Story” will premiere on February 12th on FX and Hulu.
