Break out the cashmere and fire up the wood stove in your perfectly appointed Hamptons home. Nancy Meyers is back.
The actress, whose name is synonymous with the genre she created – glossy, ambitious and heartfelt features boasting big stars – is set to write and direct a new untitled comedy for Warner Bros., set for release on Christmas Day 2027.
The project stars Penelope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackie, and Owen Wilson. The film’s logline is currently being kept secret, but Variety has confirmed through multiple sources that this is a version of Myers’ project Paris Paramount, which he plans to launch on Netflix in spring 2023.
“This movie is about a group of people who make movies and the magic and mystery of what we do,” Myers previously explained on Instagram.
Negotiations reportedly broke down at Netflix after the film’s budget jumped to $150 million and the distributor refused to go beyond $130 million. The economics of streaming movies are different than movies released by traditional studios. Top talent receives salary and back-end buyouts upfront in lieu of customary box office bonuses. Scarlett Johansson, one of the highest-paid actors in the industry, was always aspiring to be a star. She was set to work on Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist at Universal, but remains at Warner Bros. for a role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming Batman II.
With all these budgets down to zero, Warner Bros. Picture Group heads Pam Abdi and Mike DeLuca struck a deal to revive Myers’ script and bring it to audiences hungry for her signature charm. Myers will produce the project along with Ilona Hertzberg. Diana Pokorny will serve as executive producer.
Myers’ films have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, including “What Women Want,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “The Holiday,” “It’s Complicated” and the “Father of the Bride” series. She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1981 for the Goldie Hawn blockbuster, Private Benjamin. A remake of the Diane Keaton comedy Baby Boom is currently in the works at Amazon MGM, directed by Michael Showalter.
Cruise, who just won Sundance with his stunning performance in Olivia Wilde’s The Invite, is repped by CAA, Untitled, Kuranda and The Lede Company. Oscar winner Culkin is repped by WME and Brookside Artist Management. Roe previously worked with Myers on “The Holiday” and is repped by CAA, Julien Belfrage Associates, Jackoway Austin, Idaho, and Pippa Benn. McKee on “Sex Education” and “Ella McCay” is repped by CAA, Relevant, Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole and Ziffren Brittenham. Wilson is with UTA and Hersh Wallerstein Hayum Matloff + Fishman LLP.
