Movie to release Fernando Embuke’s ‘Flies’ in Mexico and Latin America

International film distributor, streamer and production company Mubi has acquired the rights to Fernando Einbecke’s Flies (Moscas) in Mexico and Latin America and plans to release it in theaters. This will be the first time Mubi will release a Mexican film in theaters throughout Latin America.

The Guadalajara Film Festival (F(CG)) opened on April 17th, and “The Flies” had its world premiere at the Berlinale last February and competed for the Golden Bear.

Best known for her previous masterpieces “Duck Season” and “Club Sandwich,” Einbecke’s latest work depicts a bitter, lonely woman who lives in a large complex and rents rooms to make a living. Her new tenant sneaks in his nine-year-old son, and after discovering him, she forms a deep connection with him.

Like “Duck Season,” “The Flies” was shot entirely in black and white. Starring Teresita Sánchez (The Handmaiden, Totem), Hugo Ramirez (Xquipi), Enrique Arreola (Duck Season, Blue Eyelids), and a young Bastian Escobar making his acting debut.

“In Fries, this nine-year-old boy transforms the world of Olga, a woman paralyzed by the fear of connection. On set, Bastian transforms the entire crew and reminds us that filmmaking should be a game. For children, playing is a very serious matter. Children don’t need poetic lines and images. Children are poetic in their very existence,” Einbecke said.

Theatrical release in Mexico and other Latin American countries is scheduled for late 2026.

Over the past decade or so, Fernando Embuke has emerged as one of Latin America’s most influential managers. Born in Mexico City and trained at UNAM, he broke out with Duck Season, which debuted at Cannes in 2004, won multiple awards, and was released in the United States by Alfonso Cuaron and Warner Independent.

His follow-up, Lake Tahoe, premiered in Berlin in 2008 and won both the International Federation of Critics Award and the Silver Bear Jury Award. The “Club Sandwich” debuted at TIFF in 2013 and won a Golden Shell in San Sebastian. Most recently, Einbke premiered “Olmo” at the Panorama department in Berlin. This is his first U.S. production produced by Plan B.

Founded in 2007 by Efe Cakarel, Mubi has expanded its global footprint to approximately 190 countries, with headquarters in London, 15 offices, and more than 400 employees. It acquired The Match Factory in 2022 and a majority stake in Cineart in 2024.

Recent and upcoming releases include pictures by Lynne Ramsay, Paolo Sorrentino, Park Chan-wook, Luca Guadagnino, Sofia Coppola, and more, as well as acclaimed titles such as The Substance, Oscar-winning Sentimental Value, and Oscar-nominated Silato.

In early April, Mubi signed a multi-year co-financing agreement with Helsinki-based investment fund manager IPR.VC to back films based on books by well-known European authors, including Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Fatherland” and Felix van Groeningen’s “Let Love In.”
