Monarch Media’s Alan Powell has teamed up with Adam Anders again for the teen musical series “Youth Group,” Variety has learned in an exclusive interview.
The show’s official logline reads, “Set in a modern megachurch, a pastor’s son questions his traditional faith, sparks an online sensation, and transforms a youth worship team into the front line of a musical battle over truth, heritage, and faith.”
The program is currently in development. There are currently no networks or streamers connected, but the project is currently available to buyers.
Anders and Powell are co-creators and co-showrunners of “Youth Group.” Mr. Anders will serve as executive producer under the Nightlight Media banner, while Powell, Steve Barnett and Vicki Patel will serve as executive producers through Monarch Media.
This is the latest musical project from Powell and Monarch Media. Powell previously co-wrote Monarch’s 2021 musical film A Week Away for Netflix, which followed a group of Christian teens at a summer camp. This led to a spin-off series of the same name, which was released by Angel Studios in 2025 and became the highest-rated show on Angel Studios’ streaming service. Powell created the show in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. Powell, a founding member of the Christian rock band Anthem Lights, also produced music for the series.
Anders is a music powerhouse producer who has sold over 100 million albums and has been nominated for a Grammy Award four years in a row. He previously worked with Monarch Media on the 2023 feature film “Journey to Bethlehem,” which Anders wrote, directed and produced. Distributed by Sony Pictures. Anders is also known for his work on shows such as “Glee” and the Disney films “High School Musical” and “Descendants.”
He is repped by Verve, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Loeb & Loeb.
In addition to “A Week Away” and “Journey to Bethlehem,” Monarch Media’s past credits include the Richard Linklater film “Hitman,” starring Glen Powell. Also on the horizon is the new adult animated film Tangles, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Abbi Jacobson, and Seth Rogen, and Babies, starring Rogen, Anna Kendrick, David Strathairn, Sharon Stone, Ed Helms, and Issa Rae. Monarch is also preparing a reboot of the 2002 film “A Walk to Remember.”
