Riding the wave of festival momentum with It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value, and The Secret Agent, MK2 Films has joined Cannes Film Festival winner Koji Fukada’s latest feature, Nagi Note.
MK2 Films is handling international sales and will introduce the project to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin this week.
“Nagi Note” is the fifth collaboration between MK2 Films and director Fukada, following “The Trial of Love,” which premiered at Cannes last year. “Love Life” participated in the 2022 Venice Games. “Harmonium” won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Award. “A Girl Missing” played in Locarno and Toronto.
Set in the idyllic town of Nagi, the film centers on Yoriko, a sculptor who lives in the shadow of a past love and continues to shape her art. When Yuri, a Tokyo architect and former sister-in-law, visits during their recent separation, she becomes a welcome distraction. Recently separated, Yuri is anxious and unsure of how to rebuild her life beyond her marriage and career. What begins as a brief escape from the city gradually turns into a quiet confrontation for both parties.
Produced by Japan’s Hassaku Lab and France’s Survivance in collaboration with Star Sands, Momofilm and Wonderstruck, Naginote is being touted by MK2 Films as “an exploration of intimate relationships that combines emotional subtleties with a keen look at contemporary Japanese society.”
This announcement concludes the banner of MK2 Films, which heads into EFM with a solid plan that includes newly announced projects from Anatomy of a Fall director Justin Trier and Todd Haynes’ Des Noches starring Pedro Pascal (which MK2 also financed and co-produced).
The company’s recent achievements include three Golden Globe Awards, seven European Film Awards, 15 upcoming Academy Award nominations, and 11 BAFTA nominations, including Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winners ‘It Was Just an Accident’, ‘Sentimental Value’ and ‘The Secret Agent’.
