Mitt Romney’s brother, George “Scott” Romney, filed for divorce months before his wife, Carrie Romney, was tragically found dead at age 64 in a California parking lot.
Scott, 84, filed for divorce from his third wife, Carey, on June 10, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. The filing lists the couple’s separation date as May 25, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason.
Scott’s motion also asked the judge to eliminate the option for either party to receive spousal support at any time during the divorce process or in the future, noting that “most of the parties’ assets and debts are separate property and were accumulated before the marriage.”
Carey indicated in court that she plans to abandon the Romney name after the divorce.
“This is a very difficult time for Mr. Romney’s loved ones and we ask for privacy as the family grieves. Our deepest condolences go out to them during this time,” Carrey’s attorney Paulina Markey said in a statement to PEOPLE.
Markey admitted that the divorce was not finalized until after Carey’s death.
“My client has not authorized me to comment to the media during this difficult and tragic time,” Karen L. Goldman, Scott’s attorney, told PEOPLE.
Mr. Goldman said he expected Mr. Scott, 84, to issue a statement at some point.

The couple married on November 16, 2016 and lived out of the public eye.
Scott, a lawyer and former aspiring politician, was married to Ronna Romney from 1967 to 1992 and Sheri Geralian from 2011 to 2016.
Scott and Carrie had no children. However, Scott has seven children from a previous marriage, the most famous being former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.
On Monday, Oct. 13, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said a woman was found dead in a parking lot in Valencia, California, after jumping or falling from the parking lot.
Homicide detectives arrived on the scene around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and located Carey’s body at the property in the 24500 block of Town Center Drive.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the parking garage where she was found has five floors and is next to the Hyatt Regency hotel.
Lt. Daniel Vizcarra, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said in a statement to multiple media outlets that the incident was “not clear whether it was a suicide or an accident. The information the coroner has given us so far is not sufficient.”
The investigation into her cause of death is ongoing, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
