An exorcism performance is scheduled for spring 2027.
“The Exorcist,” directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson and “Hamnet” star Jacobi Jupe, has been set for release on March 12, 2027, Universal announced Friday. The film was once scheduled to be released in theaters in March of this year, but production was delayed.
Flanagan (The Fall of the House of Usher, Doctor Sleep, The Life of Chuck) is writing, directing and producing Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s latest film, which is described as a “radical new take” on the iconic horror film.
The original “The Exorcist,” directed by William Friedkin, tells the story of a mother (Ellen Burstyn) who hires two Catholic priests to exorcise her 12-year-old child (Linda Blair), who is possessed by a demon. Released in 1973, the film was a critical and commercial hit, grossing $441 million worldwide and receiving 10 Oscar nominations.
In 2021, Universal spent a staggering $400 million to buy the rights to a new “Exorcist” trilogy. Burstyn returned as Chris McNeil in 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which grossed $136 million at the worldwide box office. Flanagan’s film is set in the same world as the 1973 film. However, it is not a sequel to “The Believer.”
The Exorcist will be produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum and Flanagan. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek will serve as executive producers. The film is produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment in association with Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures.
The film marks Flanagan and Blumhouse’s fourth collaboration. He wrote and directed 2013’s “Oculus,” 2016’s “Hush” and 2016’s “Ouija: Origin of Evil.” Flanagan’s latest film, 2024’s The Life of Chuck, won the TIFF Audience Award.
