Michael B. Jordan is in early talks to play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in Joseph Kosinski’s big-screen reboot of Miami Vice.
Jordan, one of Hollywood’s most beloved leads, is a fitting choice for a blockbuster auteur like Kosinski, whose filmography includes blockbuster films such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1: The Movie.” Like Kosinski, Jordan has a talent for infusing popcorn fare with real human stories, as in the Creed series he directed.
Jordan has been a mainstay in Hollywood for more than a decade, breaking out in films such as Fruitvale Station, Just Mercy and Black Panther, and most recently headlining the box office smash Sinners. Jordan had a dual role in Ryan Coogler’s horror blockbuster, playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack. Released to rave reviews on April 18, Sinners grossed $366 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing original horror film of all time. Jordan currently directs, produces (through his Outlier Society banner) and stars in “The Thomas Crown Affair” for Amazon MGM Studios.
Kosinski and Universal Pictures’ “Miami Vice” was first released in April, with a release date set for August 6, 2027. The film is based on the 1980s television series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover South Florida detectives. According to the official logline, the reboot “explores the glamor and corruption of mid-’80s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the groundbreaking TV series that influenced culture and set the style for everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
Dylan Clark and Kosinski served as producers, and Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay. Production is expected to begin next year, and the film will be shot for Imax.
Universal Pictures had no comment.
