The Miami Vice reboot heads to theatres from Universal and Joseph Kosinski in 2027, directing this year’s race hit “F1” and the billion-dollar hit “Top Gun: Maverick.” It will be released in theaters on August 6th, 2027.
The new film “explores the charm and corruption of Miami in the mid-80s” and “inspired by the first season of a groundbreaking television series that inspires pilot episodes and culture, setting everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
Currently, casting for “Miami Vice” is underway, and production will begin next year. The film is filmed for IMAX.
The original “Miami Vice” was a television show starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as South Florida undercover detectives. It aired five seasons on NBC from 1984 to 1989. The Kosinski reboot will be the second film version, following the 2006 film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. However, the film was at the box office, earning only $165 million against its reported $135 million budget.
The new film is produced by Dylan Clark (“Batman”) and Kosinski and written by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy.
Kosinski delivered its first major hit with “F1” to Apple Studios. It competed for more than $620 million at the box office worldwide. Brad Pitt starred as a washed-down Formula One racer who came out of retirement to restore glory to a failed team. The high octane race sequence has proven to be a big screen hit, making it the most growing film of Pitt’s career.
