Meryl Streep and Martin Short added fuel to romance rumors with a Tom Hanks play.
On Tuesday, the two were photographed talking to Hanks backstage at the opening performance of his new play, “This World of Tomorrow,” at the Griffin Theater in New York City.
The Bill Murder co-stars were smiling and chatting with Hank’s wife Rita Wilson and their son Chet, and Steve Martin and his wife Ann Stringfield.
Rumors of dating Streep, 76, and Short, 75, first surfaced in January 2024 after they appeared cozy while sitting together at the Golden Globe Awards.
At the time, the actor’s rep told People that they were “just very good friends and nothing more.”
Short denied the rumors a month later.
“We’re not a couple. We’re just very close friends,” he told Bill Maher on a February 2024 episode of the “Club Random” podcast.
Despite his denials, a source told Page Six in March that the acting legends had been dating for “over a year.”
“Meryl couldn’t help but fall in love with Martin,” a source said at the time. “He’s a gentleman, he makes her laugh, he’s an all around positive guy. She loves being around him.”
In September, her other Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez was spotted texting Streep during the Emmy Awards.
In a video clip that went viral on X, the former Disney Channel star can be seen chatting with Martin while looking at his cell phone, while appearing to peek at Short several seats below.
She apparently looked at her current husband, Benny Blanco, and uttered the words, “He’s been texting Meryl.” The actress did not attend the award ceremony.
Fittingly, Streep and Short play lovers on the Hulu series and were snapped making out on the show’s set in May.
