Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross have separated after nine years together, PEOPLE confirms.
“While we are sad to end this chapter of our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents we can be,” Gibson and Ross told PEOPLE in an exclusive joint statement.
The 69-year-old director/actor and 35-year-old screenwriter, who quietly separated about a year ago, plan to continue co-parenting their 8-year-old son Lars.

The two met through mutual friends in 2014 and began dating soon after. They brought Lars on board in 2017, just days before Gibson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge.
“There is nothing more exciting than hearing the nominations announced while holding my newborn son,” Gibson said in a statement at the time.

In addition to Lars, Gibson has eight older children. He has a daughter, Hannah, and six adult sons, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas, with ex-wife Robin Moore, and a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva, whom he split from in 2010.
The father’s two youngest children, Lucia and Lars, were also on the red carpet at the premiere of Monster Summer in Los Angeles in September 2024.

In January 2025, Gibson and Ross lost their Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires. The actor was out of town on business at the time, but his family and animals were safely evacuated.
“The good news is that my family and the people I love are all fine and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way. That’s really all I care about,” Gibson said during an appearance on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports on Jan. 9.
Gibson is currently working on The Resurrection, a sequel project to the 2004 Biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. The film will be released in two parts, with the first part hitting theaters on Good Friday, March 26, 2027.
