What you need to know
Meghan joined author and lifestyle creator Courtney Adamo on the Godmothers Bookstore livestream on Wednesday, October 23, where the Duchess of Sussex shared her approach to entertainment.
What is the secret she shares with husband Prince Harry that instantly puts guests at ease at their Montecito home? Open the door “barefoot” and “wearing an apron.”
“It’s a mystery,” she said. “People come in and say, ‘Oh, she’s in this with me,’ and what are they drawn to? Your kitchen. They walk right in and suddenly everyone goes a little soft.”
Meghan, 43, urged everyone to help themselves, saying she preferred drinking cider or hot toddy on the stove rather than offering tea to guests.
“I love when people can feed themselves and everyone has something on the stove to help themselves,” she said, adding, “I always have music playing in the background.”

The event, titled “Comparing Notes on Creating a Joyful Home,” was held at the Godmothers bookstore in Summerland, Calif., and was moderated by Victoria Jackson, the store’s co-founder. Adamo’s new book “The Family Home” was also published.
The relationship between the two goes back a long time. Meghan revealed that they first met as freshmen at Northwestern University, where they became friends and sisters in a sorority. During the chat, Meghan revealed that she and Adamo “backpacked through France over spring break” and enjoyed “crepes” along the way.
Meghan, who is currently mother to Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, and Adamo, a mother of five children ranging in age from 8 to 20, spoke about raising children and the lessons they try to instill at home.
Through the livestream, the two reflected on everything from motherhood to creativity. These included the “value of boredom” for children’s imaginations and, in Meghan’s words, the importance of “having a hearty laugh with a friend” rather than just sending “laughing emojis”.

Meghan also provided bottles of As ever wine to guests after the event.
Godmother’s Bookstore’s name was inspired by Meghan Markle’s husband. At Prince Harry’s reading party for Spare, he thanked Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Victoria Jackson for their support, calling them his “fairy godmothers.” Oprah then suggested the name to the bookstore’s founders.
Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry attended a bookstore opening event in September 2024.
